Hunter Holmes McGuire VA Medical Center
The Richmond VA Medical Center has worked since 1946 to improve the health and wellness of over 200,000 veterans. While the main facility is in Richmond, The VA Medical Center also has services in community-based outpatient clinics in Fredericksburg, Charlottesville and Emporia. The Spinal Cord Injury & Disorders Center of Excellence (SCI&D COE) at the Hunter Holmes McGuire Veterans Health Administration is one of the largest of the 24 spinal cord injury centers in the Veterans Affairs Medical Center System. The SCI&D COE teams provide lifetime care for veterans with spinal cord injuries. The service has 80 inpatient beds, an outpatient clinic, and a 20 bed lodger unit. The SCI&D COE typically sees 550 admissions per year, provides rehabilitation services to roughly 55 newly injured veterans annually, and sees nearly 1,000 outpatient visitors each year. The rehabilitation program is designed to strengthen and maximize both physical and psychological independence, and works to provide primary and preventative care post-rehabilitation.
